debate in a bathroom
last night (Happy Halloween!) we all went over to John and Judy's to escape the insistent ringing of the doorbell. We had supper, Marc, Laura, Gabby and Mya came over. Gabby was dressed as Winnie the Pooh (complete with pot belly) and Mya was a bear (complete with brown nose). Gabby was fairly crazy with her candy and wanted to eat it all, or at least pass it around to everyone else and telling them to "Eat this!" (Does anyone remember Ramona Quimby and her party? With the fig newtons and Ramona riding her tricycle in the house, telling her friends to "Eat this!" while she hurled the fig newtons at them with fury? What a great book.) We then took the drive into Boissevain to see J&J's new house, which is still in the process of being completed. It's looking good.
The cause for concern is the guest bathroom. Tim and my mom were worried there wouldn't be enough space in the bathroom for the door to open! Tim demonstrated this possible problem through a series of mime movements..."First you wash your hands...then you have to walk all the way over here to dry your hands because there isnt' room over there for a towel bar so it'll have to go over here...then you have to walk back to the door, then you have to back up so the door has room to open..."
Then the uncles and Tim decided it would be a good idea to find some string or something to test if the door really would have room to open into the bathroom (testing the swingability of it). No string. Uncle Johnny starts to rip up some cardboard. Oh! Mom has a scarf. That will do just fine. Dad holds one end of the scarf at the door jam. Tim pulls the scarf in a manner that would imitate a door. and yes! there will be room for the door to open into the bathroom!! success! another crisis averted.
please keep in mind this process took at least 15 minutes. oh i love my family.

Usually on floor plans people (namely architects and their people - meaning AT's) draw in door swings, so if you had a set of plans, and I like to think that there are some considering the house is being BUILT, it would have shown if a door would fit. Although that doesn't account for maneuverability generally. Like the bathroom door in Hill's apartment for example...sure it opens and doesn't hit the cabinet, but how do you close the door once you are in? or, even worse, how do you get out once it's open. designers.....

I bet Uncle J could save a few bucks if he didn't put in a door.
ReplyDeleteProblem solved.

Good description Leah! That is exactly how it happened!! But yes, the house is lovely and will be a joy to visit, and eat at, and meet at, and play at!!

ReplyDeleteMy bathroom is exactly like Erica described. Getting out is a tricky, and takes some practice, because if you do it wrong you could end up stuck between the toilet and the sink. Glad to know that a scarf was handy for you guys to figure it out.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I can see it all with that great description. Thanks for that funny story and I love my family too. auntie bard
